On Thursday 27 February, we will dive into The Digital Transformation of the European Border Regime: The Powers and Perils of Imagining Future Borders with dr. Paul Trauttmansdorff.
This seminar discusses The Digital Transformation of the European Border Regime (Bristol University Press, 2024), a book that explores how creating large-scale databases for migration control shapes and transmits visions of border security in Europe. Drawing on science and technology studies, it analyses the ways in which imaginaries of digital transformation are intertwined with the production, enactment, and justification of future borders. To this end, the book delves into the work of the European Union agency eu-LISA – its sites, projects, visions, and operations in managing the IT systems in the Schengen Area. The seminar will reflect on the agency’s role in the border regime and how its visions legitimize and normalize contemporary bordering with its consequences in Europe.
