Join the 7th edition of RUNOMI’s annual congress on 25 June, dedicated to the timely theme of migrant inclusion and populism. Expect a day of engaging discussions, fresh perspectives, and interdisciplinary exchange on migrant inclusion in today’s political climate.

The programme will feature a key note lecture by migration historian Nadia Bouras (Leiden University) titled From Welcome to Distrust: The Political Perspective on Moroccan Migrants and Their Ties to Morocco.

Furthermore, multidisciplinary artist Mounir Samuel will perform, providing insights from his recently published book ‘Nederland voor de Nederlanders’ [the Netherlands for the Dutch].

Of course, speakers from different academic disciplines, including many RUNOMI members, will be addressing the topic from different perspectives:

  • Jeanine Suurmond (RadboudUMC), How populism can increase ethnic health disparities
  • Andrej Zaslove (Empirical Political Science, RU), The Radical Right and Immigration: Populist Challenges to Belonging and Integration
  • Niels Spierings (Radboud Social Cultural Research, RU), Minority-Populist rapprochement, measurable or myth?
  • Karen Geertsema (Centre for Migration Law, RU), The populist turn in Dutch migration laws and policies
  • Giacomo Solano (Economics and Business Economics, RU), Inclusion or exclusion? Government ideologies and policy response in the face of forced migration
  • Javad Imani Khoshkhoo (International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University) and Noemi Mena Montes (Language and Communication, RU), Between News Engagement and Disengagement Amid Disinformation and Distrust: The Contested Agency of the Ukrainian Diaspora in the Netherlands
  • Kirsten Smeets (Religious Studies, UU)

As RUNOMI strives for its research to have impact not only in theory but also in practice, societal organisations such as Represent Jezelf and Open Embassy will reflect on the academic contributions.

The congress will be moderated by Ricky van Oers (Centre for Migration law and coordinator societal impact RUNOMI).

The programme will allow for ample possibilities for socializing and networking during the breaks and the closing drinks!

Participation is free of charge.
