It was great to join the IMISCOE Research Network 2024 conference last week, both as a discussant and a panelist in the session, “Digitalization and migration: rethinking socio-economic inclusions and exclusions. Noemi Mena Montes was an excellent Chair (we missed fellow panel co-chair and organizer Giacomo Solano), and we received thoughtful discussant input from Pascal Beckers. I presented “Navigating digital (hybrid) marketplace labour platforms,” looking at new (or perhaps reconfigured/perpetuated) dynamics affecting migrant parents and (often also migrant) domestic workers, with the rise of online marketplace platforms (like babysitting apps or Facebook groups).
Meanwhile, I learned a lot and received inspiration from fellow panelists Stein Monteiro and Marie Godin. I really appreciate that Noemi Mena Montes also presented our paper “In her multimedia words: Ukrainian women in the Netherlands, social media and connectedness,” based on data she collected this past year, exploring this group’s connectedness to both new and former communities across physical and virtual spaces.
